How did we identify data collection gaps?

After compiling the cleaned occurrence records for each species (click here for more details) and identifying the botanical countries in which each species is expected to occur according to Plants of the World Online (POWO; click here for more details), we assessed the discrepancy between the appropriate data collection and their expected occurrence across world botanical countries. By appropriate data collection, we mean occurrence observations from preserved specimens (e.g. from herbarium collections) with valid geographic coordinates (e.g. matching the described location).
